About me

Gideon “Gale” Schlegl is an interdisciplinary artist and educator based in St. Louis, Missouri. Drawing from autobiography and intersectionality, he explores modern surrealism through multimedia sculpture, textiles, painting, installation, illustration, writing, music, and the body; examining embodiment, perception, growth, and transformation.

Schlegl's practice bridges art and health, emphasizing sensory engagement, material histories, and the ongoing practice of mending through creative storytelling.

Alongside his studio practice, Schlegl works in public health administration, supporting research and institutional initiatives.

Schlegl has over a decade of experience as an illustrator and writer and has illustrated seven published children’s books, including Buddy by Jacqueline Krafft, which has been distributed worldwide.

At the Center of Creative Arts (COCA), Schlegl participated in the Arts Integration Cohort, where he developed and taught inclusive arts curricula with local schools. He also led multimedia and creative writing instruction for teen apprentices at STL ArtWorks and taught undergraduate sculpture, painting, and drawing at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

His museum experience includes serving as a preparator at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, working with archival collections at the University Museum at SIUE, and interacting with patrons at the Museum of Contemporary and Religious Art.

Schlegl holds an MFA in Fine Art from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and a BA in Fine Art and English, with a minor in Art History, from Saint Louis University.
